The word ka’ek in Arabic means cake, it can be referred to cakes or cookies.

Jerusalem Kaek or Kaek Al Quds is a kind of Palestinian pastry sold in the markets of Jerusalem and Nablus, and are widely spread during the month of Ramadan. They are rings of baked dough covered with sesame, and are very similar to Ramadan bread that is sold in the markets of Damascus and Lebanon.

Ka’ek Al-Quds is considered one of the city’s icons,  you can find them all around the City stacked on pushing carts, something that is a MUST to grab before you leave the city.

Every Palestinian mother would remind her kids on the way back to home, “make sure you bring some ka’ek with you.”

As Palestinians their connection to Al-Quds (Jerusalem) perhaps goes deeper than just a religious one, it’s ingrained in their souls and roots. The idea of going for a visit, of walking down the streets of Salah Al-Din, getting closer to the walls surrounding the Old City, entering through its Gates, walking through its narrow roads, browsing the little souvenir shops, the colorful pottery, the olive wood crafts, the different color of pickles, the aroma of spices, the smell of falafel frying, just simply the scent of the Old City gets in your body and soul, and every visit leaves you with a fresh and new experience that you continue to carry.
